TL;DR: Evolved the design of a PoC (proof of concept) into a fully formed product for the management, analysis, and reporting of construction projects at NEOM, a cognitive city being built in the Middle East.
NEOM is a next-generation cognitive city being built in the Middle East, and Nortal is playing a key part in delivering software to support millions of citizens from around the world in their new home and workplace.
The Smart Construction PoC featured a real-time map of the construction site and its workers (aided by wearables) alongside basic analytics of the workers activity. This was developed alongside a worker registry of all construction workers at NEOM. All of which aimed to improve the clarity and efficiency of construction projects across the region.
I joined this project towards the end of its PoC stage in order to take ownership of the design delivery. As well as push the project over the line, I was tasked with evolving the designs into a future vision of what the product could be, based on our research findings from the PoC.
We were lucky enough to have a dedicated user researcher on the project team. She produced detailed reports from the field giving us great insights and product recommendations based on her findings. I combed through these and combined the findings with the stakeholder's and product owner's vision, in order to produce a new, scalable information architecture and content that would fulfill our user persona's needs.
Once the sitemap and content was put together, I used that to create scalable navigation and modular page structure that could be reused for multiple dashboards and reports in the future.
The designs were then populated with example content that were very much achievable metrics that we could track on construction sites. These designs have been used by the product and consulting teams of Nortal for new business proposals.
